Horology
Definitions of Horology from 3 sources:
Horology is the science of measuring time and the art of making timepieces.
Horology is the science of time, timekeepers and timekeeping.
Horology is the study of the science and art of timekeeping devices.
The mechanical clock has hardly changed over 5 centuries even though there is a myriad of different types of clock. The definition of horology also implies clock repairing and restoration. Latterly the electric clock has become a collector’s item and as such requires the restorer’s input to bring it back to an operating condition.
For the hobbyist and professional restorer the work still follows the principles used throughout the history of clock making. The current tools used, whilst some are similar or indeed the same, include new ones that have been introduced utilising modern methods; this is especially so in gear cutting on electrically driven machine tools.
The aim of the Chilterns Clock Club is to foster the practical approach, spread the awareness of horological techniques and enjoy ourselves in clock restoration among other like minded people.
